Ends on May 1, 2018

The submission period for our seventh annual So It Goes Literary Journal opens February 1, 2018 and ends on May 1, 2018 at 11:59 pm EDT. This year's theme is Lonesome No More

The Kurt Vonnegut Museum and Library (KVML) was founded in 2009 to keep the literary, artistic, and cultural legacy of Hoosier author Kurt Vonnegut alive. In 2018, most of our programming focuses on the theme of Lonesome No More, as we look to promote mental health awareness and community.

Lonesome No More! was a slogan author Kurt Vonnegut used in his book, Slapstick. We understand that you can’t get rid of loneliness just by getting rid of “aloneness.” Vonnegut knew this; as a World War II veteran who was captured by the Nazis and survived the Allied firebombing of Dresden, Germany, he suffered from PTSD and depression. He carried more than his share of loneliness throughout his lifetime, but that intense loneliness isn’t unique to people with PTSD or depression. It also affects people with other mental health concerns: anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, or even sadness when being bullied or feeling like people just don’t understand. All humans suffer from loneliness at one time or another. That’s why we believe a year of programming focused on mental health awareness is so important.

In keeping with this theme, all submissions or submit-ers featured must touch in some way on the idea of Lonesome No More!

Submissions are limited to five photographs and/or artwork. Employees of KVML and KVML Board and Advisory Board Members are not eligible to participate. Everyone else is encouraged to send in a submission(s): Students, amateur artists and photographers, professional artists and photographers, young, old, and current/retired military veterans. The veteran community was important to Vonnegut, as he served his country too, so we imagine he'd love to see artistic representation from current and former military personnel, as well.

We will accept new and previously published work (simultaneous submissions are allowed with notification) and will credit the original publisher for previously published works.

If the work in your submission(s) has been published elsewhere (even if it is your own work), you may need permission to publish it in this issue of So It Goes. If this is the case, you will need to obtain written permission from the rights holder(s) and include this written permission with your submission(s). Please request worldwide rights for print and electronic formats in all languages and editions.

If you are unsure if your usage requires permission, here are some guidelines for you to make that determination.

·         Four Factors Test and Fair Use

·         Asking for Permission
